Obituary

Nina Brandt, wife of Stephen Brandt of Steinbach, Manitoba; Formerly of Blumenort, Manitoba; passed away peacefully in the early morning of Saturday, July 05, 2025. We do not mourn as those who have no hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 . We have the Hope of the Resurrection through Salvation in Jesus Christ and though we are separated for a little while, we will join her before too long in the Paradise of Joy.

Nina Brandt was born Nina Hesse on February 3, 1940, in Lichtenau, Russia, which is now Ukraine. She was born to Maria (Bergen) & William Hesse. By the time she was 4 years old she had experienced hunger, fear, cold, fleeing, uncertainty, homelessness and was a fatherless refuge. It was the second World War. These experiences are well documented in her book and influenced everyday of her life. Only on July 5, 2025, was she finally released from the shadow of those experiences.

Nina has been a devoted wife to Stephen William Brandt for 60 years. They were married July 20, 1965. She is the mother of three daughters Carrie Marcos (Boulos), Kim Friesen (Dale), and Stephanie Penner (Mike). She is the grandmother of Tanya, Katelynn and Courtney, Alexis, Angelica, Jocelyn and Sam; and Jayden, Asher, Micah and Keirin. She is the great-grandmother to Aiden and Madison Heger and Charlotte Pops.

Nina was predeceased by her mother, Maria Hesse and her elder sister Lucy Braun. And her husband the late Menno Braun. Agnes Doerksen is her only surviving sister. She and her husband John live in Blumenort.

Before her marriage, Nina worked at the Municipal Hospital Kitchens. She was the engineer of her home until she worked at Penner Farm Service stocking shelves. Her most recent accomplishment was the publishing of a biography in 2016 with the help of her sister-in-law, Violet and the late Larry Moore.

The livestreamed funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Blumenort Community Church Cemetery, Blumenort, MB.
