Obituary

Peacefully, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Katharina (Tina) Sawatzky left her earthly home and was welcomed into the arms of her loving Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Tina was born to Abram & Agatha Wiebe on October 16, 1943, in Colonia Menno, Paraguay. Times were financially hard, but Tina spoke fondly of her childhood, parents and siblings. Attending church and hearing the written word of God was an important part of the weekly family commitments; this is where her foundation of faith began. The Wiebe family enjoyed being together and loved to laugh; it was a joyful noise when the family was together.

Tina immigrated to Canada in 1970 and spent time on a dairy farm, working at Granny’s Poultry as well as a live-in caregiver for the elderly. In her retirement, Tina enjoyed time with family and friends, generously sharing her time and resources. Her last years were spent as a resident at Bethesda Place in Steinbach.

Nothing seemed to cause Tina to doubt her faith in her Heavenly Father. In 1966 she heard a voice call her name but didn’t see anyone around. When she heard it a second time, she knew it was God calling her. She went to her bedroom and knelt down to pray. She said, “If it is you, God, help me to do what your will is for me.” She was keenly aware of her need for God’s grace and forgiveness, and it was there that she committed her life to Him. She loved her family, but nothing held so dear a place in her heart as Jesus. It is with these cherished memories and hope that we have the comfort of knowing that she is with her Lord that she followed so faithfully.

Tina is survived by her children: Pauline, Ted, Viktor, Amanda, Ursula, Daniel and Melvin and their families, 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, two brothers: Peter and Ben and one sister: Lisa.

She was predeceased by her parents: Abram & Agatha Wiebe, three brothers: Jacob, Cornie and Diedrich, and two sisters: Meika and Nettie.

One of Tina’s life verses was Psalm 119:105 “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.”

Auf Wiedersehen, Until We Meet Again.

The funeral service for Tina will be held on Monday, July 14, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. Public viewing will take place prior to the service.
