With great sadness we announce the passing of Peter Dyck (1954-2025).
Peter is survived by his wife Lucy (nee Wojcikowski), his sons Nick (Nat), Timothy (Kerri), and Phil (Erin) and three grandchildren Birdy, Allie and Io.
Peter was a lifelong member of Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church where, through the sharing of his gifts and his time, Peter contributed whatever he could to showing his love by such actions.
Peter was born to Gerhard and Lena Dyck in Volendam, Paraguay. The family emigrated to Winnipeg and Peter lived with his eight siblings on Strathcona street. From an early age, Peter was always one to look for fun. Be that playing in Omand’s Creek as a child, or generating mischief with his brothers, Peter was always full of life.
Peter attended Isaac Brock, Daniel Mac and Westgate for a short time before deciding he needed a break. He went to work for a while then got his GED so that he had a completed high school education!
By the early 1970s Peter had met Lucy, who would become his best friend, wife and lifelong companion. After years of dating, the couple tied the knot in 1977. He and Lucy moved to Calgary after their marriage. Upon gaining his apprenticeship as an electrician, Peter began to make his way in the world, starting in the shadow of the Alberta foothills.
Their son Nick was born in 1982, and Timothy was born in 1984. Not long afterwards, Peter accepted a position with Manitoba Hydro, resulting in the fledgling family’s return to the prairie province. The Dyck family rounded out in 1987 with the birth of their third son, Phil.
Peter started in the Electrical and Construction Division and spent time in northern Manitoba, working on northern dams and several sub stations in the province. Peter would occupy his non-work time building puzzles, a lifelong hobby that he kept up until the very end. Peter also was a hobbyist photographer, sparking an interest and sharing the passion with two of his sons.
Peter loved camping with his family, taking them on many summer trips. From traveling out west to see family in Alberta and B.C. to trips to the Interlake and Whiteshell, this love of the outdoors was a constant throughout his life. As he and Lucy grew older, their car-camping turned into seasonal camping, with tarps and tent trailers and eventually they found a community of like-minded friends in Pinawa.
As the years flew, and the family grew, Peter became part of the Maintenance division, based in Winnipeg. His time was divided amongst the city offices, managing the repairs and improvements needed for each location.
During this time, his hobbies of wine making, salsa creating, hot sauce collecting, and puzzle solving kept him engaging with new interests. His volunteer work with Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church saw him help as an electrician, a caretaker on the Cemetery committee, a parent volunteer for Kids Clubs, and overall helping hand for the congregation. Peter contributed his electrical expertise to projects with Mennonite Disaster Service on many different projects. Up to the very end, Peter was always willing to give of his skills and of his time to help those he could.
Although retired since 2014, Peter never slowed down. He changed focus. Now was the time for leisure! Travelling Canada, taking cruises, road trips, and bus tours were now the regular. When not traveling, Peter and Lucy could be found at Relax Ridge, their little oasis near Pinawa.
Peter worked with and for family, friends and those lucky enough to get a piece of his free time. Helping with home repair, vehicle maintenance or even snow blowing, Peter was always showing his love for others. He adored his grandchildren, Birdy (9), Allie (7) and Io (3) who all engaged with his goofy nature and bountiful energy. Whether it was horseplay, book reading or picking up from daycare, Peter always had a hearty smile and energy for his grandkids.
To summarize a life in so few words will never do justice to the impact that Peter had. Keep your memories of him and share them when you can – laughter was a language Peter was most fluent in.
The celebration of life will be held Monday, December 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield St. Winnipeg, MB.
