Dad grew up on a grain farm that raised cattle, pigs and hens. As a child, he loved to ride his bicycle especially going to visit his cousins a mile away. He was educated at McNulty Elementary school in Meade, Kansas from grades 1 to 8, and also had the opportunity to attend Steinbach Bible College for a year in 1963/64.
His first jobs involved helping on the family farm and was the chief operator of their new self propelled combine at age 16. He helped regularly at the local livestock auction market getting paid $0.75 to $1.00 per hour. At age 18 he worked for a custom combining crew as a grain truck driver.
At age 19 he took a trip to Manitoba to visit friends and relatives and met a beautiful girl through a dare. After a lot of mail correspondence and several more visits, she became his wife in 1954. This marriage lasted 71 years!
The first 2 years of marriage were spent in Denver, Colorado where Dad did his service for the government as a conscientious objector to war, working in the city hospital emergency ward. In the fall of 1956 they moved to Manitoba.
Dad bought a run down farm with 240 acres in an area called Little Moscow in 1957 that had some old machinery. For the first two years he used a steel wheeled tractor, 6 foot combine and a 10 foot drill. Over the years he added several buildings and acres to provide a living for his growing family.
At age 10, Dad’s sister Lena helped him become a Christian one night when he could not sleep. At age 15, Dad was baptized upon confession of his faith in Jesus Christ at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church in a stock tank they had just buried in the yard for this purpose. Church was always important to dad and it would take a serious blizzard to keep his family from attending. He was involved for many years in the Sunday school executive, missions committees as well as having Bible studies in Roland and Carman. He encouraged his children to go on many missions trips and supported them in these endeavours.
Dad loved cars. If you were to ask him about different times in his life, it would often start with, “I was driving a …… at that time.” Then he would proceed to tell you if that vehicle had been a lemon or not!
After selling the farm in 2008, Dad was able to finally see a dream come true in having a farm auction sale. It was a testament to how God had blessed him to have so much equipment to sell!
Moving to Brandt Street in Rosenort was a big adjustment but they loved living on the river and still had a big house for hosting all their children there. Moving to the Heritage in Rosenort was more difficult. Then, as his health began to decline, they moved to Niverville and then to Grunthal. The most important thing to dad was that he could still be with Mom. We are grateful that they could be together until his final move to Heaven!
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at the Rosenort EMC, at 2:00pm.
A private family viewing and burial will take place prior to the funeral service.
As a family we would like to thank the staff at Menno Home in Grunthal for the excellent care they provided for dad over the last two years.
