Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Vivian Dowhy say their final goodbye to their beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, who passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the age of 81 years.

Vivian is lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years David, her two sons Brian (Meriena), Guy (Roxane), and grandchildren Kerigan and Connor.

She is predeceased by son Scott, parents Bertrand and Emily Horning, brother Terry, brother in-law Gary, sister in-law Clara, and parent’s in-law Joseph and Anne Dowhy.

Vivian is lovingly remembered by her brothers Bob, Poke, Wally, and sister Jeanie, and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Mom was born in Russell, Manitoba on July 10, 1944, and grew up in the nearby small town of Binscarth where she attended school. A few years after graduating, a handsome gas man who goes by Dave had moved to Binscarth for work. A chance encounter outside a local business became a relationship.

A couple of years later they married on October 28, 1967, and moved to Minnedosa where Brian and Guy were born. After a three-year stint in Fort Frances, they moved to Steinbach in 1974 where Scott was born, and they lived there until her passing.

Mom was a proud supporter and cheerleader of her sons and later, her grandchildren in whatever activities they participated in. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed summers camping and fishing with family and friends. Her favorite place was on the water at Birch Point in the bow of the boat with a fishing rod out, book in one hand and licorice in the other.

Mom was extremely outgoing and made friends easily. She worked at Pic-a-Pop, Biovail, Toro, Canadian Tire, and several years as a guard at the local RCMP Detachment. Earning an income to help the family was nice, but it was really where she kept up to date on the pulse of Steinbach. She also volunteered her time with minor hockey, the local legion, 55 Plus, and other organizations.

Mom and dad loved to get together with friends to socialize, share meals, and play cards. She enjoyed doing word puzzles and was an avid fan of curling.

Mom will be sadly missed, but she leaves behind many vivid memories to help us carry on. She will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege to spend time with her. We thank God for sharing her with us.

“Honor her for all that her hands have done.” ~ Proverbs 31:31
