Obituary

With profound sadness we announce the unexpected passing of our dear husband, father, son and son-in-law, brother and brother-in-law, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend Nicholas Joel Bergman (Nick). He passed from health complications on Monday, January 5, 2026, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach, Manitoba. Nine days prior he suffered a significant health incident leading to an overnight stay in Ste. Anne Hospital.

Nick’s passing creates a significant void in the lives of his children, wife, family, and everyone who was fortunate enough to call him a friend. His mother, Debbie will greatly miss seeing him and the kids each morning for their coffee and catch up and fixing his daughter Luna’s hair.

Predeceased by his grandparents Phyllis and Raymond Mayer and Henry Bergman, his uncles Abie Bergman and Barry Mayer, he leaves behind his wife Miriam Bergman (nee Justus), daughters Keira Schneider and Luna, sons Max Justus, Finn, and Blaze, parents Robert and Debbie Bergman, siblings Travis (Sue), Kenton (Christine), and Elissa, and grandmother Helen Bergman. The love and memories made with his many nieces and nephews – Destinee Harms (Clayton), Harmony Peters (Nolan), Soleil Bergman, Faith Bergman, Noah Bergman, Seth Bergman (Lexie), and great niece and nephew Ivory and Winston Harms – will remain in our hearts.

He further leaves behind his father and mother-in-law Olga and Viktor Justus, and brothers and sisters-in-law Irma (Cosy), Nelli, Sabine (Thomas), Aaron (Xenia), Lea (Adam), Manuel, Sylvia (Mike), Steven, Sabrina, Jason (Judith), Jasmine, Jolene, and many nieces and nephews on the in-law side.

Nick and Miriam married in December 2017 in the fashion he loved – with a small gathering of his closest people in the farmhouse just finished out of an existing barn. Nick had a heart of gold and Miriam’s spirit is of love and nurture to her immediate families and many siblings, nieces, and nephews.

Nick preferred a quiet and peaceful lifestyle proudly managing the 52 acres of fourth generation Bergman farmland to start Sandpit Farm in 2010 for sheep and cropping. Nick loved hiking, exploring, crafting, carving, and hunting the land with his sons and daughters who are now fifth generation Bergmans. Nick had a simple yet deep personal faith in his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The evidence of his faith was demonstrated by how he treated others as well as seen in his consistent, loyal character. Another thing of significance was him having a bible in each of his hunting shacks. Proverbs 3: 5-6 was a scripture dear to Nick’s heart and influenced his faith and life deeply: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make paths straight.”

Nick was honourable and respectful in all his dealings, and a quiet, introspective person. Nick never wanted to create enemies but always behaved in a manner which built friendships. Nick was the best helper with a cheerful attitude and willingness to sacrifice. It was important for Nick to meet expectations. Nick’s heart was tender, and he cared for others, especially his wife and children. We will never forget his big beautiful blue eyes and wide welcoming smile.

One of Nick’s fondest life achievements – following his children and family – was hiking the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island, BC in 2004 with his sister Elissa and father Robert. This scenic, intensive rainforest and ocean trek spanned 75 kilometers and six days from Port Renfrew to Bamfield. The group persevered through rain, cold, mud, 60 lb. hiking packs, fewer than normal food provisions, and wild animals seen or known to be lurking. They showered in waterfalls, boiled their water, cooked on camping stoves, and shared a small tent at night. He was proud of this accomplishment during a time in his life that he was seeking strength.

Nick overcame life challenges with a steadfast spirit, with the help of his Saviour and a deep resolve and conviction. Over the last eight years he was privileged to stay at home with the children, providing care and teaching on the sheep farm. Prior to being at home with the kids daily, Nick worked 19 years on the hog farms with his dad Robert and brothers Travis and Kenton.

Nick enjoyed teaching his children all about hunting and the outdoors. We suspect he spent more quality time with his children in the last eight years than most fathers do in a lifetime. We consider this to be a great blessing.

The family wishes to honour the local paramedics, Steinbach Hospital staff, and local RCMP for their tremendous efforts in their lifesaving attempts.

A private Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.
