Peter is predeceased by his beloved granddaughter Madeline Abigail; parents Peter & Anna Wiebe; brothers Dave, John; brothers-in-law Henry Thiessen, Jake Klassen.
Peter was born on September 13, 1935, in Barkfield, Manitoba. He grew up on a farm and attended school at a small country school near the family farm. At the age of 14, he left school and joined his dad and older brothers to work on the family farm. At the age of 19, he left home to work in Winnipeg for Fuller Brush Company, soon realizing factory work was not for him and moved into construction instead, shortly thereafter forming WW Construction in Winnipeg.
When he first met Mary, he thought he had won the lottery. They married on September 14, 1957. They began their life together in a small apartment on Balmoral Street and then moved to a new home on McCauley Place in North Kildonan, where their first 3 children were born. In 1962, Peter and Mary and their young family moved back to the Grunthal area to begin their life on a dairy farm, and in very short succession, added three more daughters to their family.
During the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s Peter worked as a farmer, as a Real Estate broker, bought into Steinbach Hatchery and Feed Mill and continued serving the southeast in agricultural feed and chick production, until his retirement in 2006. After retiring, he started yet another business, The Rustic Wedding Barn, which he enjoyed immensely, hosting several of his grandchildren’s weddings on the property that he loved.
Peter had a number of hobbies throughout his life. Taking after his father, he enjoyed tinkering and restoring antique tractors with his brother Jake, owning 26 between the two of them at the height of their obsession. He also enjoyed reading about Mennonite history, making violins, playing violin, drawing, and Lego. His children and grandchildren have also greatly benefitted from his artistry and expertise in creating anything with wood.
Peter enjoyed travelling the world. With Mary by his side, they enjoyed several tropical vacations to Mexico, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. They ventured to more exotic locations like the Ukraine, Paraguay, Israel, and China, and Peter also joined a ministry trip to Kenya. For their 60th wedding anniversary, the family took Peter and Mary on a cruise of the Baltic Sea and St. Petersburg, Russia was a favourite stop for him; seeing a place that was part of his heritage was so meaningful to him.
In early 2025, Peter began having some health struggles. It was a difficult and frustrating time for him, especially as he began to lose his independence. Peter was thankful for the support of his family and friends, and the unwavering faithfulness of God.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Grunthal Bergthaler Church, 101 Southwood St, Grunthal, MB.
Private family burial will take place prior to the service.
