It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Gil Cowan, my partner of 15 years, after a short but courageous battle with cancer at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre on January 28, 2026.
He will be truly missed by daughters Melanie Cowan, Kerrie (Ro) Cowan, sisters Yvonne (Gary) Sabrich, Corinne Cowan, brother Ken (Sue) Cowan, sister-in-laws Charlene Cowan, Dianne Bassett, Colleen Bassett as well as many incredible nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. Also his special pet Wilbur will truly miss him.
Gil was predeceased by his parents James and Leone Cowan, parent-in-laws Elmer and Viv Bassett, brothers Kelly and Blaine Cowan, brother-in-law Ed Gramiak and sister-in-law Kim Bassett.
Gil was born in Swan River on August 17, 1956 and grew up in the town of Kenville. In his youth, Gil and the Kenville boys built forts and rafts. Gil stayed in the building trades for life.
The rink was the hub of Kenville skating and playing hockey with the Kenville Flyers. He also enjoyed curing at the rink in town.
Most of his career was working at Star Building. He loved working with wood and built many decks, fences and sunrooms.
In his retirement years Gil enjoyed golfing, camping, travelling, playing cards with friends and attending many functions at the Paradise Community Center.
He is going to be missed so much. A Celebration of Life will be held this summer.
A special thank you goes out to all the staff that looked after Gil during his time at Bethesda Regional Health Center.
