Dad grew up in the Pansy area, and his heart never really left it. He often spoke fondly of those early years, cherishing the drives back through the countryside and reminiscing about the simple joys of dairy farm life. At 19, he left the farm to begin working at Parkhill Bedding in Winnipeg, where he dedicated six years. During that time, in 1964, he married our Mom when he was only 22 years old. Soon after he began a long career with York Tire, remaining there for 19 years. That following year, with courage and determination, he took a leap of faith – purchasing two trucks and starting his own venture in the trucking industry.
With a few jobs in between, he began working as head custodian at Green Valley School in Grunthal, a role he faithfully served in for 16 years until retiring at 65. Even during those busy years, he somehow found time to help lease and operate Dairy Capital Restaurant from 1992 to 1994 alongside family. He could be found washing dishes, sweeping and mopping floors, sampling the fruit salad every Sunday morning before the big smorg to ensure it met his standards, and making certain the concrete pad outside was always spotless.
Retirement did not slow him down. Never one to sit idle, he returned to work part-time at Piston Ring in Grunthal from 2007 to 2017. Hard work was simply part of who he was. He took pride in every job he held and built many lifelong friendships along the way.
In 2011, our mom was diagnosed with cancer. Dad stood strong and cared for her with unwavering love and respect. He spent every hour with her in the hospital, never leaving her side until the day she passed. After that difficult time, Dad’s demeanour changed. His look softened, his voice became gentler, and we heard “I love you” more often.
A few years later, through mutual friends, he met Ann Derksen, and they were married in 2018. After their marriage, they moved to Niverville and later made their home in Steinbach. Together they shared seven and a half happy years, formed new friendships, and he embraced his roles as step-dad and step-grandpa. He was truly happy.
On January 6, 2026, his health declined suddenly and severely. In the days that followed, there were multiple ambulance trips to the emergency room as he endured several minor heart attacks, required three additional stents, and battled pneumonia and kidney failure. He received numerous blood transfusions, had a litre and a half of fluid around his lungs removed and ultimately underwent surgery to remove a ruptured spleen.
Despite every effort made on his behalf, his body had simply grown too weary.
We want to thank Bethesda Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital, Health Science Center and lastly Boundary Trails Health Center for showing their true care and compassion as we navigated this health journey with our Dad. We all felt loved and well taken care of.
See you later Dad, we love you… Oba yo!
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service.
