Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Phillip Hebel at the age of 84, following a brief battle with cancer.

Dave was born in Vita, Manitoba on January 26, 1942, to Marija and Jakob Hebel. From an early age, he learned the value of a strong work ethic and the importance of devotion to family – values that guided him throughout his life. He often reminisced about the long walks to and from school with his siblings and the many hours spent picking blueberries. His love of sports began in his early years and continued throughout his life.

Dave married Beatrice Prasek on August 7, 1965 in Vassar, Manitoba. Together they raised four children. Dave was a proud father who would do anything for his kids.

They made their home in Sprague, Manitoba, a community he loved and served faithfully. Dave’s work ethic was unmatched. He worked for many years in the forest industry, where he developed lifelong friendships. Later, he operated heavy equipment and drove truck. In his later years, he could often be seen riding his lawn mower around the community, carefully manicuring lawns.

Dave was a devoted family man who especially adored his grandchildren. He could often be found at their sporting events, cheering loudly and occasionally letting the referees and umpires know exactly how they were doing.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice; daughter-in-law Lisa Hebel; daughter Leah (Ross) Mateychuk; son Carey (Rae-Anne) Hebel; and daughter Shannon (Chad) Cote.

He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Brittany (Matt) Gearman; Brett Hebel; Jesse, Joe, and Avery Mateychuk; Bryce and Tori Cote; Calleigh and Brady Hebel; as well as his great-granddaughter, Emma Gearman.

He is also survived by his siblings: Marion Bird; John (Lil) Hebel; Helen (Craig) Bell; Olga (Gary) Wesner; Betty McQuigge; brother-in-law Larry (Lynn) Prasek; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dave was predeceased by his parents, Jakob and Marija Hebel; his mother and father-in-law, John and Jeanette Prasek; sister Eve (Lloyd) Reid; brothers Jack (Loris) Hebel, Walter Hebel, and Henry (Gloria) Hebel; sister Ann Hebel; brothers-in-law Norman Bird and George McQuigge; and his beloved son, Dion Hebel.

A private family viewing will take place. Dave’s wishes were to have his remains buried at the Sprague Cemetery during the next Hebel reunion.

Dave will be deeply missed, but the memories he gave his family and community will live on for generations.
