Melvin Richard Hiebert, aged 66, passed away peacefully at Health Science Centre on March 30, 2026.
He is survived by his wife Clara of 41 years, his son Robert (Renae), and one grandson Benjamin, his sister Charlotte (Lawrence), brothers Charles (Roseanne) and Howard (Pat) and their families, as well as two brothers in law, Ken and Jacob (Marina) and sister in law Marge (James)
He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Helen Klassen and stepfather Peter Hiebert.
When Melvin was 5 years old his father, Jacob Klassen passed away. Helen married Peter Hiebert a few years later and brother Howard joined the blended family.
After the marriage of Peter and Helen the family moved to Gruenthal, Saskatchewan. After graduating high school Mel went to Millar Memorial Bible School for two years, after which he was accepted into the RCMP. This had been his dream since he was a young boy, and was often heard imitating the sound of the police siren. He was posted in Selkirk Manitoba, it was then that when attending an auction sale he met his wife, Clara. He was heard to say that since she bought all the items that he wanted he decided to marry her so that he could get his antiques back.
Mel served in the RCMP for approximately 3 years when he was lured away to go into business. Mel worked in the insurance business for 16 years, during which time, they had the opportunity to travel to many conventions in far away places. However after working in the insurance industry for 16 years Mel decided to change gears and having a love for cars and trucks he decided to apply for a dealer licence. He spent the next few years buying and selling cars and work trucks. He developed a real knack for finding good deals and helped many friends find good used vehicles. It was a fun time always driving different cars or trucks. However that too ended when Mel decided to retire.
Mel loved to play tennis at the Kildonan tennis Club, play cards with the guys on Friday nights, that was the highlight of his week.
In the fall of 2021, Mel developed a severe case of pneumonia and was in the hospital for 5 months, he slowly recovered his strength and was able to live a near normal life. In the fall of 2022 Mel and Clara moved to Niverville. Mel enjoyed his mornings with the Negash friends, attending Church of the Rock, playing cards at Hespler’s, just enjoying the more quiet life in a small town. Most of all Mel loved Jesus, he was looking forward to going home to heaven, He said he had his bags packed and he was ready to go.
The funeral service for Mel will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at the Bothwell Christian Fellowship Church in New Bothwell, Manitoba with viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at the Hespeler Cemetery in Niverville, Manitoba.
The family thanks you for all your thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.
