Obituary

Our most precious mother, Marie-Louise Legal (née Gauthier), aged 75, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, at Villa Youville in Ste. Anne, Manitoba.

Marie-Louise was born on August 13, 1950, in St. Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the young age of 17, she married the love of her life, Paul Legal, and together they shared a happy and loving marriage for 55 years.

She was a determined and hardworking woman. She began working at just 15 years old at Olympic Sportswear Sewing Factory in Winnipeg, where she quickly learned to use a serger – famously remarking, after sewing through her own nail, “That’s what happens when you put your fingers where they don’t belong.” She briefly worked in the laundry department at St. Boniface Hospital, but her small stature made the work difficult. She later tried her hand at substitute teaching in Richer and Ste. Anne School, where she was lovingly called “Mom” by many.

Mom spent many years working at Dawson Trail Opportunities as a Work Crew Supervisor. However, one of her favourite jobs was working at Don’s Bakery alongside her mother, Thérèse Gauthier, and her sister-in-law, Gilberte – especially enjoying fresh donuts straight from the fryer.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Tending to her flower beds, sewing, playing cards with her grandchildren, traveling in the big rig with Dad on his work trips, playing computer games, and watching cat and dog videos on Facebook.

She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her children, Rachelle Legal-Cechvala (Scott), Carole Nicolas (Gerald), and Robert Legal (Debbie). She was a proud grandmother to Amélie (Shane), Fenway, Madison (Kyle), Mackenzie, Cole, Austin, and Fawna; and great-grandmother to Colbie, Brogan, Darwin, Esher, and Riley; and a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her brother, Gérard Gauthier; dear friends Mary and Harold Tullos of Texas, Edna Cechvala, and a special friend she met during her stay at Ste. Anne Hospital, Beatrice Vermette. The two quickly formed a meaningful bond and brought comfort and strength to one another.

Mom had a way of expressing herself whenever she was in a rush, she would say, “Sont partis à Chicago.”

A celebration of Marie-Louise’s life will be on May 23, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Crossings Funeral Care. All who knew and loved her are welcome to come together and celebrate her life.

We would like to thank the Ste. Anne Hospital Staff for their extended care, support, compassion and love they provided mom while in their care. We would also like to thank the Villa Youville staff for making mom feel at home during her short stay.
