On Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 3:45 a.m., Mom woke up in the arms of Jesus, passing peacefully in her bed at Rest Haven Care Home.
Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Diana (Wally) Fiege of Didsbury, Alberta; Don (Betty) Plett of Steinbach; Phillis (Ken) Penner of Blumenort; Larry (Annette) Plett of Kelowna, British Columbia; and Jarrod (Rosanne) Plett of Beausejour. She is also lovingly remembered by 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, two sisters-in-law, and many relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Archie; her son Gary; her granddaughter Paula Ruby; and her grandson Michael.
Mom was a selfless person who was always ready to help anyone in need. She was known for baking endless loaves of bread and batches of buns, which she lovingly delivered to her children, grandchildren, neighbors, and friends. While living at Bridge Park Assisted Living, she would load her walker with baking and travel the hallways delivering treats to others.
At the age of 17, Mom was baptized upon her confession of faith at Prairie Rose EMC Church alongside the love of her life, Archie. They were married on August 31, 1946.
After their wedding, Mom and Dad, along with their good friends Arno and Elnora Kroeker, traveled by train to Thunder Bay for a joint honeymoon.
Mom and Dad spent many winters in bush camps where Mom cooked for the crews. She laughed when she told us the story of one day having cooked a large pot of potatoes and while draining the water from the bowl, it slipped from her hands and fell into the slop pail. Having no time to prepare more before the men were coming for lunch, she quickly retrieved them, warmed them up, and served them. Later, the men told her what a wonderful meal she had prepared.
During the early years of marriage, Mom and Dad farmed for four years before taking over the Landmark General Store. In 1957, they purchased a plumbing business and worked hard to support their growing family of two daughters and four sons.
In 1980, tragedy struck when their son Gary lost his life in a vehicle accident while driving home from work. It was a heartbreak Mom never fully recovered from.
Mom was a woman of deep faith and faithfully prayed for her children, grandchildren, and many friends.
She was one of the hardest-working people you could ever meet. Even though Dad bought her a riding mower, she preferred cutting the grass with a push mower because she believed it did a better job.
Mom believed in keeping a spotless home. After staying in a luxury condo in Florida, she said one of her favorite parts of the trip was cleaning it. When Dad later hired a cleaning lady, Mom would clean before she arrived because she was embarrassed to have someone clean a dirty house.
Mom also had an impatient side that became a family joke. Growing up, if we wanted seconds at the dinner table, we learned to keep a firm hold on our plates because the moment Mom saw an empty plate, she would quickly take it to the sink to wash.
Mom spent her final years living with constant pain caused by severe arthritis. We are thankful her pain is now gone and that she has joined those who went before her in an eternity free from suffering.
Our family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Rest Haven Nursing Home for their loving care over the past six years.
We praise God for the gift of a loving mother. We will miss her deeply, but we would never wish her back from the joy and peace she now knows.
We love you, Mom.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” ~ Matthew 25:21
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
