Obituary

It is with the deepest sorrow and sense of profound absence, but with loving memories that the family of Linda Peters announces her passing on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the age of 98. She passed away peacefully at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.

Our Mom possessed joyfulness and inner strength to every individual who knew her. Mom was so loved by her small family which grew in numbers over the years. She is survived by her two daughters, Marcia Hill (Robin) and Rae Fehr Hiebert (Jake), three grandchildren, Ashley Van de Velde (Karl), Courtney Chaput (Myles), Christopher Hill (Shannon), and great-grandchildren Everett, Fehrrah, Henry and Raylah (Van de Velde), Blaire, Brielle and Paisley (Chaput), Robert and Willow (Hill), Merik and Acadia (Hiebert) and Jake’s four children Adam, Aaron (Amie) Ashton (Candice) and Alexandra (Scott). Also, she leaves her in-laws Aldyth Toews, Anne Peters, and Ed Penner.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Henry Peters in 1999, her son-in-law Ernie Fehr in 2004, her parents Peter R. and Anna Toews, and 14 siblings and 14 Peters’ in-laws.

Mom was born in the village of Steinbach, the population at the time was 2,500 and Steinbach is now a city with a population of 20,000. Mom has witnessed the monumental events of the past century and spoke of them with wisdom and clarity. There are few challenges Mom didn’t tackle. Her career started at the Royal Bank in 1945 at the age of 17. One of the first women to be hired by the Royal Bank of Canada in Steinbach. Many men were conscripted in wartime, and it was changing for women to enter the work world. Mom worked at the RB for seven years and then stayed home for a few years with her family. Mom was itching to get back to the work world and started to work for Hawkins Accounting honing her skills and she very soon started her own L. Peters Accounting business in the early 70’s working out of her home and continued working in this active accounting business till she was 90 years old! She got to know many business owners who stuck with her skills over many years.

After busy accounting season Mom and Dad usually followed with a holiday… numerous times to Hawaii, Palm Springs, Europe for their 25th anniversary, many US destinations and Toronto to visit Marcia… so often accompanied by their lifelong friends Edmar and Martha Rempel.

Apart from her career, Mom had many outside interests, ranging from sports to arts. There really wasn’t much she didn’t like, she was an avid hockey, football and baseball fan and even golf if there were no other sports to watch! Mom knew the players and the stats of most teams. She loved the Symphony and Opera performances in Winnipeg where Mom and Dad had season tickets with their friends, usually followed by a Rae and Jerry’s visit. She loved attending the Shakespearean plays in Stratford and musicals in Toronto. Her best pastime was reading and so much interest in History, Poetry, Fashions, Royalty following, and of course doing the daily Free Press crosswords (without the help of google)!!

Mom’s faith played a very active and committed role in her life. Her dedication and belief in and to God inspired her to play a role teaching Sunday School for over 30 years; first to teens and then adults. Also serving in many avenues in her church including chairing numerous ladies’ groups over the years, doing the church accounting, involved in missions committee and many times hosting missionaries in our home. She loved to be involved and was gifted with her mind and memory and all with wit and humour. She loved to share her knowledge and that included her Bible knowledge.

Among all her work and volunteering Mom always made time to be with her grandchildren. Especially when Rae became a widow she became like a parent to the girls. Later she was so blessed to be actively involved in the lives of her great-grandchildren who all loved their Nanny!

Mom was born on a farm property on Old Town Road (now Loewen Blvd) and lived in Steinbach all her life, the longest being on Ash Street for over 30 years. Mom and Dad were married for 52 years, and then Mom became widowed at 72, and after a few years she moved to her Stonebridge Village condo where she lived for 19 years on her own. Mom made so many new friends there and was sad to leave the condo life. Of course she was active on the condo board there as well. At 95 years of age, she moved to Stonebridge Manor till her passing. Such wonderful care was given there and new friends made again! Thank you for all who cared and helped Mom over the last while. She was so blessed with good health and independence in her life. Mom never had pain and always maintained a positive attitude into her old age.

Mom was a kind, gracious and accomplished lady. She was loved and respected in this community, an ever-gracious hostess to family, relatives, friends and missionaries. She loved and welcomed every new family member. Mom is now at peace and at rest with her maker in Heaven. We’re sure she will be chatting with Dad about the events of the past 25 years!

Mom was a wife, Mother, Nanny, and best friend that we as family never expect to meet the likes of this side of eternity. We love you and miss you… and say goodbye till we meet again!

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing beginning at 1:30 p.m.
