Obituary

Gérard Gagnon, 81, of La Broquerie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, January 19, 2026.

He is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Yvette (Bell); his children Robert (Marijke Vonderbank), Marc (Roxane Dupuis), and Julie; and his four cherished grandchildren, Riley, Annie, Mario, and Yanik.

Gérard also leaves to cherish his sister Estelle Taillefer, brothers Louis and Roland Gagnon, brother-in-law Gilles Desorcy and sister-in-law Madeleine Dupuis (Fernand) and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Paul-Émile and Rosina (Larivière), as well as many brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters, and sisters-in-law: Joseph and Lillian (Carrière), Oscar, Yvette and Wilfred (Turenne), Claire Desorcy, Jeannette and Donat Desorcy, Gilbert and Lorne Friesen, Lynda (Barthelette) Gagnon, Guy Taillefer, and Carmelle (St. Hilaire) Gagnon.

Gérard was the tenth of eleven children. An active and spirited man, he spent many hours with his brothers Louis and Roland getting into both good – and not so good – mischief. Hockey, hunting, and fishing were lifelong passions. As a devoted Montreal Canadiens fan, watching their games on RDS français was the highlight of his week. Being a passionate hockey enthusiast, Gérard played for the La Broquerie Habs for over 15 years. Proudly wearing number 8, he formed lasting friendships and delighted in sharing stories from the “good years.” Hockey camps, countless hunting trips to Binscarth, and memorable fishing outings over the May long weekends were among his most treasured memories.

In the winter of 1962, he met the person who would change his life – appropriately, at the arena. On a dare, he asked Yvette to a party, and five years later, they were married on September 2, 1967.

After several years in St. Boniface and the birth of their first child, Robert, the couple settled in La Broquerie in 1974. Their second child, Marc, was born the following year, and in 1979, their family was completed with the arrival of Julie.

After moving to La Broquerie, Gérard began working as a truck driver for Fournier Mobile Feeds, later acquired by Landmark Feeds. He dedicated 25 years to the company before retiring in 2000. The many friendships he formed during this time remained meaningful to him throughout his life.

Throughout the years, Gérard and Yvette enjoyed many memorable trips with family and friends across Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Gérard also generously shared his time and talents as a hockey and baseball coach and as an active member and director of Seine River Wildlife.

Retirement kept Gérard busy with camping with family and friends, driving a school bus, and meeting with his “wood carving” group – a hobby that revealed his hidden artistic talent. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed morning coffee and conversation with friends in town.

Gérard will be remembered for his many qualities, including his “joie de vivre”, attentiveness, kindness, curiosity, generosity, and deep love for his family.

The memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at Saint Joachim Roman Catholic Parish, La Broquerie, MB.

In recent years, Gérard faced health challenges and spent time in and out of hospital, particularly in Ste. Anne. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the hospital staff and Dr. deMoissac, for their care and compassion.
