He was predeceased by his wife Freda, son Kenton, and infant daughter Lucille.
Dad was born in Lowe Farm, MB, the oldest of three children born to David and Elizabeth Schroeder.
In 1940 when Dad was three years old his father passed away. His widowed mother eventually moved her little family to Blumenort, MB where she married again to CS Reimer and a blended family began. From the early years of Dad’s life and into his teenage years he worked the mixed farm with his stepbrothers and was often hired out to other farmers to help provide for the family.
In 1952, his stepfather moved the family to Mexico but when the family continued to Belize to the Mennonite colony of Spanish Lookout Dad did not move with his family.
In 1957, as a young man of 21, Dad decided to return to Canada. Later he traveled back to Mexico to the Quellen Kolonie. In this community he found the love of his life, the beautiful Freda Plett. They got married on June 28, 1959. After their first three children were born and a small farm was established, Mom and Dad moved back to Blumenort, MB in 1964. Dad built a brand new house up the hill on Second street and the family grew to six: three boys and three girls.
Dad was a good provider for mom and his children. His work included driving a feed truck for PJ Loewen, working as a mechanic for Fast Brothers, doing carpentry and cabinet work, farming, and finally long distance truck driving.
In 1976 Dad actively pursued his dream of owning and operating a farm. His dream became a reality when he moved his family to Fisher Branch where he built a new house and farmed for two short years. His dream vanished when asthma and allergies made it impossible to continue farming.
Another move was made to Otterburne where Dad started working at Winnipeg Bible College as a boiler engineer. Our family lived in staff housing for one year and then moved to Second Street in Kleefeld in 1978. The family lived there for over twenty years. During that time, in the fall of 1984, Dad and Mom lost their middle son Kenton due to a fatal car accident. Later, in the 90s, Mom was diagnosed with cancer, and Dad stopped trucking to care for her during her chemotherapy.
Dad and Mom decided to move to Steinbach in the year 2000. They settled in a home on Barkman Avenue. Dad formally retired from trucking at 65, but continued to take casual trips for a few years after that. Due to increasing health issues, Mom and Dad decided to move to Bridge Park Manor.
Mom’s health issues were getting worse and a decline began until she passed away in 2020 amidst the covid pandemic. After 62 years of marriage, doing life alone was tough for Dad.
Like the road atlases our Dad used while trucking, he gave us direction in our lives. Our father loved and respected us and encouraged us to live a life pleasing to Jesus. Thank you Dad for everything you taught us and the wonderful life you gave us.
The family would like to thank Arlene and Dad’s Bridge Park community, Pastor Ernie Koop and his EFC church family, and his PBX coffee buddies for their support and friendship these last several years.
We are comforted that Dad is now walking with Mom in heaven.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing one hour prior beginning at 2:00 p.m.
The interment will take place at Blumenort Community Church Cemetery, Blumenort, MB.
