A great lady has left us but we find comfort in knowing she has gone to a much better place.
Psalm 23 verse 6: Surely goodness and love shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Susie Loewen, 94, formally of Steinbach passed away peacefully on August 23, 2018 at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, with family by her side.
She is survived by sisters Rosie Funk and Verna Funk and brother Elmer Schultz (wife Edna), numerous nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours.
She was predeceased by her husband Jacob, her parents Susan and David Schultz, her sister Elsie Schultz, brother-in-law Corny Funk, nephew Leonard Funk, her brother David and sister Helen in infancy.
Susie, was born as Susana Schultz on July 22, 1924 in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua Mexico. She spent her childhood and early adult life in Mexico. She spoke fluent Spanish having gone through school there and it proved helpful while running the family store in Cuauhtémoc. She had a fine business mind which was obvious in the meticulous way that she managed the store as well as the farm that she later shared with her husband Jake.
Susie was baptized on confession of her faith in Santa Clara, Mexico prior to the family moving to Canada in 1951, after having bought a farm near Kleefeld, Manitoba. Susie helped the family finances by working at the University of Manitoba. She married Jacob Loewen in 1958 and they moved back to Mexico to farm together there for several years before moving back to Steinbach, Manitoba in 1970’s. Family was very important to her and she was thrilled to be reunited with everyone again.
Susie had an enquiring mind and was interested in many things from world politics and news, sports, traveling, and current events. She spoke four languages fluently. She always made a big deal about children and loved to hold babies.
Susie was an example to all of us of how to live well. Her home was always beautifully kept but her priority was always making people feel welcome and comfortable. This was especially true for children who could literally do no wrong. She was unfailingly gracious right to the end even when her life got painful and uncomfortable. Her life was a testament to her strong and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ and we praise God for His assurance that with that belief she is with him in Heaven (John 3:16). We were all blessed to have her with us for as long as we did to show us how to live with love, kindness and forgiveness.
The funeral service for Susie Loewen will be held on Tuesday August 28, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with viewing prior to the service and a reception to follow. Interment to follow reception and all are invited to attend.
