View From the Legislature

Recently I had the privilege of attending the Rescue on the Island event, put on by the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) team.

I am pleased to welcome back all 56 of my colleagues to the Manitoba Legislature after the annual summer recess for the beginning of the Fall Session.

Last week our government released the public accounts for the 2016-17 fiscal year and I am pleased to see critical progress is being made towards reducing the province’s deficit.

Manitoba has become the first province in Canada to introduce a high-dose flu vaccine to better protect vulnerable residents of personal care homes from influenza.

I am excited to announce that Reg Toews will lead the implementation of paramedic self-regulation in Manitoba.

I am pleased to announce that regulations are now in place to bring the registered nursing profession under The Regulated Health Professions Act effective May 31, 2018.

Additional personal care home capacity will be needed over the next 25 years to care for people with significant needs and who can no longer safely remain at home or in supportive housing.

With the 2017 school year starting this week at the Hanover School Division, I would like to remind all motorists to drive with extra care in school zones, as annual restrictions took effect on September 1st.

It was an honour to recently welcome the new class of medical students (who will graduate in 2021) at the Max Rady College of Medicine Inaugural Day and White Coat Ceremony held at the University of Manitoba downtown Campus.

Last Thursday I was joined by Hanover School Division trustees, staff and students to announce that Steinbach Regional Secondary School will receive provincial funding to replace their aging elevator.
