Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother Annette on April 12, 2021 at the Riverview Hospital, Palliative Care Unit at the age of 95.

Left to mourn mother’s passing are her five children Ray (Jean), Ida (Harvey) Robbins, Lee (Barbara), Paul (Diane) and Jerry (Jean), eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandson, sisters Cecile (Doria) Benoit and Alice (Dave) Letkeman, one brother Hector (Shirley), two sisters in law Clemence Delorme and Doris Paquin and one brother in law Eugene Maybroda as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their extended families.

Mother was predeceased by our father Origene (her husband of 56 years), her parents Jules and Antionette Paquin and ten of her siblings- Bertha (George) Claeys, Jeanette (Albert) Morand, Phil, Joseph, Nina (Adrienne) Brouillette, Ted, Bernice (Udo) Leng, Renold, Peter (Doris), Diane (Eugene) Maybroda.

Mother was born on December 22, 1925 in Marchand, MB. She was the second of 14 children in the Jules and Antoinette Paquin Family. While being raised in LaBroquerie, she excelled in school and, in the process, skipped two entire grades due to her scholastic achievements. Unfortunately attending school beyond elementary grade eight was inconceivable in such a large family with limited resources. Mother worked at mostly domestic jobs at the Richardson’s Farms and for the nuns at the St. Boniface Hospital.

On September 24, 1945 she married our father Origene. Shortly after getting married, dad started working for the CNR where they would spend a few years living in isolated communities in northwestern Ontario. In 1953, they were fortunate to move to Sprague, MB. Like other families in the area, they were able to raise their family and taught them to have a good work ethic, to value a good education, to practice their faith and to be involved in numerous community projects and activities. First and foremost, one of mother’s main goals was to give her children the opportunities that she and dad never had. Once the children got older, mother returned to the workforce and was employed at various times by the Sprague Hotel, Border Shell and Carl & Kay’s Grocery Store.

Mother’s door was always open to family, friends and neighbors. Her home cooking was a treat for many. Throughout her life, she enjoyed family gatherings, attending bingo/casinos, embroidery work and being involved in the rearing of her ever expanding family. In their retirement years, mom and dad enjoyed traveling mainly to visit their family but occasionally they would venture to Arizona, the Caribbean and other parts of Canada.

Four years after dad passed away, mother relocated to Winnipeg to be closer to her many family members and better health care services. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel towards all of the family in Winnipeg that enabled mother to remain in her apartment for so many years and provided her with the daily care, love and support that made her last years such happy ones. Special thanks to her beloved sisters Cecile (also mother’s neighbor) and Alice; her beloved nieces, Jane and Angel; her late nephew Dennis and his wife, Diane and all of their extended families. They always made a point of inviting mother into their homes for the many special occasions and their family gatherings. The care, and compassion showed to mother was mirrored by her love for all of them.

We would also like to acknowledge the excellent health care that was given to mother by Dr. Garcia and Dr. Pilkey and their staff over the last eight weeks at the Riverview Hospital, Palliative Care Unit. We couldn’t have asked for more.

Due to the Covid 19 restrictions, a private funeral mass is being planned with interment to follow at a later date. If family and friends care to donate in the memory of mother, they may do so at the East Borderland Community Housing Inc. (Box 207 Sprague, MB R0A 1Z0), Riverview Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
